Urvogel is a research collective working on digital security and internet censorship circumvention in repressive environments.
We study how states filter, throttle and shut down the internet, and test the tools and techniques people rely on to stay connected and safe.
The name comes from the German Urvogel, “primeval bird” — the common name of Archaeopteryx, a 150-million-year-old fossil with feathers and wings, but also teeth, clawed fingers and a long bony tail: one of the earliest known birds.
